Urban fantasy is fantasy set in the real, modern world, usually in a city, where magic and supernatural creatures exist alongside ordinary life. Instead of a made-up kingdom with dragons, you get demons running the clubs, vampires running amok, and a heroine who has to deal with both.

The stories tend to be fast-paced, with action, mystery, and a sharp-tongued narrator, often a little romance too. If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Dresden Files, or Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, you’ll feel right at home.

The Demon Underground series is urban fantasy set in San Antonio, Texas. The Stone Whisperer Chronicles take place in the same world in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Both, sort of. The heroine, Val Shapiro, is eighteen and just out of high school, so the series appeals to older teens. But it’s written for adults too, with adult-level danger and romance, and it’s shelved in both young adult and adult urban fantasy. Expect some language and innuendo, but no explicit sex scenes.

The Stone Whisperer Chronicles are paranormal mysteries set in the Demon Underground world with the added complication of shifters. They star Ivy Weiss, a stone whisperer (she first appeared in Catch Me) who. can talk to gemstones and use their inherent magic. She has her own snarky hellhound.
